What is a Creative Brief and Why Is It SO Important?

Hi everyone! I wanted to discuss the topic of a CREATIVE BRIEF and the common questions I get surrounding them. When I discuss a project with a client and I tell them they will need to complete a Creative Brief, one of the first things they say is, ‘What is a Creative Brief?’
Here’s your answer…
A Creative Brief is a series of questions that are filled out by the client about their project. It asks questions about their company, ideal customer, project summary, emotions that they want the project to exude, color preferences, etc.
Sometimes a potential client will ask… ‘Do I need to fill out a Creative Brief?’

YES!

The answer is always yes! Let me tell you, I have done projects without a Creative Brief and trust me it can put the project at risk for a lose-lose situation and nobody wants that. In the past, before I made the Creative Brief a requirement for my process, I usually didn’t have an issue providing the client with exactly what they were looking for, but one time it broke a project.
After that, I thought to myself… never. again.
When I tell the client that YES it has to be completed I would sometimes get this response, ‘That’s too much work, just make something.’

 

Ok, let’s just sit on that for a minute.

That’s. Too. Much. Work. Just. Make. Something.
Hmmm… here’s my response.
That’s right. Starting a new project IS WORK. If you aren’t ready to put in the work, then I’ve gotta tell you, you aren’t ready to start this project. Trust me, I’ve been there! Why do you think it took me years to actually sit down and complete a Creative Brief for my OWN brand? LOL!
It’s WORK and it’s challenging! Trust me it’s easy to say:
Make something that appeals to everyone and all demographics so that everyone buys my stuff!
…but that’s not the reality. Right? So let’s be real here.
Yes, the Creative Brief and completing it is essential for a successful project design. If you don’t have an idea of what you want and who you want to put it in front of then the Creative Brief can be scary. It’s scary because it points out all of the things that

YOU DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOUR OWN BUSINESS.

That’s right! Your OWN business.
What IS my brand culture? WHO am I trying to reach with my brand? What FEELINGS do I want them to feel when they see my brand?
It can feel intimidating, right?
You know what’s more scary? Starting a project and getting nothing out of it because you didn’t know what you wanted.
